Maestro listens in to a Normandy conversation on 6 June 2009
Scene: A beach somewhere in Normandy
Prince Charles: How did you get so many medals, my man?
D-Day Veteran: Well, your esteemed Royal Highness, I joined up in 1939 at the age of 18. I was involved in the Norwegian campaign in 1940. I did Commando training, and then fought with the 8th Army in the desert where I was badly injured and was decorated for bravery. By the time I recovered, I was drafted for the Normandy invasion and fought on until the end of the war in 1945. So the medals reflect long and meritorious service in the major campaigns of the war, plus one for outstanding bravery. How did you get so many medals? - if I may be so bold as to ask your esteemed Royal Highness, whose kindness in accosting me is quite overwhelming for the poor, unworthy creature that I am.
Prince Charles: That's none of your bloody business, but in essence it's because I'm a Prince - and don't you forget it!
