The Duke of Edinburgh’s common touch OR Bad behaviour at the Chelsea Flower Show (Point 1)

At the 2008 Chelsea Flower Show the Duke of Edinburgh was visiting one of the displays and spoke to a young Australian whose display it was.
Duke: I like your tree fern.
Young Australian: Actually it’s not a tree fern, it’s a member of the Cycad family.
Duke: I don’t want a bloody lecture.
The typical comment on this incident in the newspapers wasn’t ‘What extremely rude behaviour!’, but more like ‘Good old Duke, he really put that Aussie in his place!’ The royal family expect and are given deference even when they behave badly towards members of the public. Why is this?

Low self-esteem
The hacks who write these newspaper reports and their editors must all suffer from low levels of self-esteem. I always smile when ‘Rule Britannia’ is sung at the Last Night of the Proms, especially when the audience gets to the words ‘Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.’ Bowing & scraping to your 'social superiors’ or walking backwards in their presence aren't the actions of self-respecting free people.
